THE Chinese New Year always brings with it a wealth of predictions from practitioners of the ancient Chinese art of feng shui, along with traditional Chinese practices for the New Year, including a general housecleaning in order to shoo away the bad and to welcome the good in the coming year.

For feng shui practitioner Ding Lu Torrefranca, brown and green are lucky colors for the year, as well as red, yellow and orange. White and blue colors are to be avoided.

And the preferred gems are tiger eye, “eight auspicious” jade and mystic nut jade, for never-ending success, long life and health and wealth.

According to Torrefranca, the feng shui flying star directions will have the following luck:

For southeast (dragon and snake), there are high chances for bickering, conflicts, and disagreements, in extreme cases resulting in law suits.

The southwest direction (sheep, monkey), is in an auspicious sector for academic and scholarly pursuits and research, as well as for travel and romance.

The west direction (rooster) can expect a career advancement or work recognition and enhanced social connections. However, abrupt complications are possible, too.

The northeast direction (ox, tiger) will have frequent emotional turbulence; medical complications may occur and intense rivalry may abound in the workplace.

The east (rabbit) is the illness sector and serious health complications may occur. On the positive side, there will be property and real estate gains.

The northwest direction (dog, pig), is the most negative sector of the year. Avoid this area or keep it quiet and inactive.

The north (rat) is the secondary wealth sector. Promotions, new ventures and general good news and opportunities are possible.

The south (horse sign) is the primary wealth sector of the year, with good financial returns in career or business.

Metal and water elements are bad luck for those who have these elements in their signs.

Torrefranca’s predictions: three ships will sink and three planes will crash during the year. South Cebu will have enhanced opportunity for wealth while north Cebu will be good in terms of travel and good health and in the authority of a public official.

Cebu City will focus on education, and woman power will rise. Mindanao will have more calamities from typhoons and heavy rains causing more flooding, Manila will also be having flood problems and viral infections.

President Aquino’s administration will be shaken with more scandals that will come out into the open. A dormant, undersea volcano off Camiguin may erupt.

In Cebu, the businesses to prosper are fashion/clothing, furniture, airlines and restaurants, electronic gadgets, and real estate and publications.

Some people sincerely believe in these predictions. Others are skeptical about it.

Whichever person you are, pray that the dire predictions will not happen.
