AMAZING. This year’s Handumanan (Remembrance) will be an amazing show and will offer the general public, particularly the thousands of balikbayans who are here for the Sinulog celebration. A number of local talents will be there to interpret appropriate songs that signify the importance of the elements fire, water, earth and air. Show coordinator Odette Jereza, production director Richie Mendoza and choreographer Glen Albutra have joined hands to ensure a memorable show that would surpass those in previous years in terms of overall presentation and impact. Girlie Laspiñas, Gil Maningo, Eva Santos and Max Surban, the King of Novelty Songs, are some of the entertainers of Handumanan on Thursday, Jan. 16, at the terraces of Ayala Center Cebu.
Exciting. This year’s Cebu Popular Music Festival promises to be a very exciting musical treat for all. Slated on Friday, Jan. 17, at the Cebu Coliseum, it features 12 original Cebuano/Visayan compositions that are vying for the major prizes. Aside from the fact that the entries have been divided into three different genres or categories, their live accompaniment will be taken care of by the Level Up, one of Cebu’s topnotch show bands. We salute the Cebu Arts Foundation Inc., chaired by former Rep. Eduardo Gullas, for sustaining the songwriting festival as a yearly undertaking being part of the Sinulog Week celebration. As usual, former Pinoy Dream Academy scholar Apple Abarquez and this writer will emcee the songwriting competition’s grand finals on Friday night.
Revival. We commend the officers and members of the Cebu United Radio and TV Artists (Curta) Corp. for coming up with what it billed as a cultural revival show. Literary writer Teofy del Mar and retired educator Rosita Rizada, club president and honorary chair, respectively, are on top of preparations to stage Pasiklap: Operitang Hilaw on Feb. 22, starting at 7 p.m., at the Teatro Casino Filipino of Waterfront Hotel in Lahug. The show features a number of immortal Cebuano/Visayan songs that would help rekindle the love for our literary heritage. Del Mar and Rizada stressed that proceeds of the show will go to the club’s medical aid fund.
Performers. We learned that the Feb. 22 show will be participated in by some Curta talents themselves. To perform are Baby Condeno, Angeling Yburan, Adeline Talam, Jun Villarta, Vicky Solis, Eking Fernandez, Dr. Warfe Engracia, Dante Luzon, Eking Gutierrez, Bobsteel Bacalso and Matet Cabudlan. We also gathered that Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama and Vice Mayor Edgar Labella will appear as guest performers in the show.
Script is by Cora Rosales-Jayma, musical arrangement by Mario Jadraque while Nick Ampatin is the director.
Laudable. Curta is a laudable organization because it is the only group in Cebu that gathers retired, semi-retired and active radio, stage and television personalities or artists who share a common goal, which is to help themselves in times of financial challenges. Of course, the promotion and preservation of the Cebuano/Visayan cultural wealth will always be their primary target and for that, we give Curta two thumbs up.
