MORE than 100 fiddlers enthralled Cebuanos recently. No, they didn’t play their music on top of the roof. For the first time in the Philippines, 152 fiddlers (violin, viola, cello) gathered together for a grand recital named “A String of Fiddlers.” Held recently at the Northwing Atriumof SM City Cebu, the grand recital gathered together the music students of nine music schools: Music & Me Studio; Bella Musica & Violin Discovery; Francis Balo Violin Studio; Classic Orchestra Music Studio; Duyan Childcare Center Cebu Inc; Cebu Music Learning Center; Sacred Heart School Ateneo de Cebu ; Bridge Music Academy; and 7 Spirit.

The music students showcased their musical prowess in a program that ranged from Suzuki Books 1 and 2 pieces like Twinkle Twinkle Variations, Perpetual Motion and Witches’ Dance to the more difficult Double Bach Violin Concerto, Brandebburg Concerto No. 3 and Canon in D, among other works that regaled the SM audience.

The people behind the nine music studios—Rodelio Clodove, Norwena Belocura, Dr. Wayneth Abaiz, Maricel Sevilla, Marie Antoinette Gorgonio, Marc Hamlet Mercado, Francis Balo, Reynaldo Abellana, .Irene Alcantara Cruz, Dr. Melissa Cipres, Dennis Namocatcat, Krizmagnum Ibaos, Juliet Jung, Akihide Noguchi—have one thing in common: they are all graduates the Cebu Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO) 10-year development program of the Salvador and Pilar Sala Foundation. Dr. Ingrid Sala Santamaria is the inspiration and mentor.

In her closing remarks at the recital, Dr. Santamaria said that the CYSO alumni have proven to be “not only good musicians and pedagogues but also wonderful human beings and citizens (who) have given back, have paid forward and have made a difference.”

She said that the Sala foundation wanted to do good for the community with the CYSO program “(sic) expecting nothing in return but now, 22 years later, as we stand here in the midst of these hundred fiddlers, we can indeed say ‘The harvest has been truly great.’”
