Utzurrum: Moments to remember

-A A +A

LUCKY Alvin Tan, incumbent president of the Rotary Club of Cebu West, for having two gorgeous daughters. Last year, it was Alyssa Jane celebrating her 18th birthday, and very recently, her sister, Aerika Jane, made her bow to society, with a debut at the Casino Español de Cebu.

Sweet and lovely was Aerika Jane as she entertained guests. She wore a short formal in fuchsia, with a beaded floral bodice, so becoming of a young sprite! Her equally good-looking mom, Jane, was similarly garbed, but she chose a darker shade of fuchsia, with monochromatic hues of pink, lavender and purple blooms for the top. Being a closely-knit family, the Tan relatives from Bacolod made a special trip here to mark the memorable event in every young girl’s life. Many more summers, Aerika Jane!

Tall and svelte, and fair and lovely best describe Elena Sy-Chua, well-traveled and golden-hearted supervisory air stewardess of Cathay Pacific Airways (CX), whose legion of school batch mates, colleagues in the CX industry and many friends never fail to remember her natal day every March.

This year, Elena chose to take a longer vacation leave so she could treat her family—hubby Alfredo and kiddoes, Brian and Isabella to a (brr) mountain holiday at Whistler, in faraway Vancouver, Canada. How the kids gamboled in the snow in their windbreakers and heavy wear! It was a vacation never to be forgotten. On her actual birthday, her buddies took her to a picnic grove called Rocky Point Lake, where they had the time of their lives.

The festivities didn’t end abroad; for once in the islands, her Manila-based gang mates hosted lunch at the Manila Polo Club, where they set back their watches to the early ‘80s and reminisced that point in their young adulthood. Last stop was Radisson Blu Hotel (Cebu), this time for Sacred Heart School for Girls batch 1979, of which Elena is a proud member. And you know exactly what batchmates yak about when they get together! Belated birthday greetings Len!

Our pilgrimage last year to Italy (and then to Eastern Europe) to attend the canonization of St. Pedro Calungsod, brought together a diverse group of travelers from Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod, and even from as far as Arizona, and California, USA. Being together, all 46 of us, for 16 days and nights, resulted in a special bond of friendship.

Only 10 of us were from Cebu, but believe it or not, when we hear a member of the “entourage” is in town, we drop everything and manage to meet.

As we did for Sacramento-based, very likeable couple, Doc Rodolfo and Consuelo (Baby) Perez, who breezed into town to attend the Sinulog and other religious activities. Doc and Baby are active in organizing spiritual and religious events in their area.

Hosting the lively lunch was Maribel Koksent-Kratz, Cebuana-now-turned California resident, at the family owned native restaurant, Golden Cowrie, where she brought along visiting sis-in-law, Dr. Jun Lara-Kokseng, from Florida.

To date, this has been our fourth reunion. Truly our special bond is stronger than ever! When’s the next?
