HAPPY Chinese New Year! I avoided using the Chinese language because of the many versions I have come across.

Anyway, if my memory serves me right, this is the first time that the event has been declared a public holiday in the country. Once again, happy Chinese New Year!

Since this is the last day of January, I’m excited to hear some feedback on the outcome of the second outing of the Sinulog sa UAE (United Arab Emirates). Organizers (Cebuano OFWs, of course!) were optimistic that this year’s edition will surpass last year’s event in terms of attendance, excitement and other factors.

One of the many activities during the Pista Senyor festivities, which drew crowds of techies and cell phone lovers, was Globe Telecom’s Neon Carnival launch featuring the Globe Mobility Store-on-the-Go.

True to its theme, the carnival had a festive atmosphere with the techies availing themselves of the latest prepaid, postpaid and broadband plans as well as promos (including daily raffles). Cloudfone and Samsung showcased their latest gadgets.

Of course, Globe execs, Jerry Yntig to name one, were on hand to greet guests and would-be clients.

The management and staff of the Community Rural Bank of Catmon (Cebu) Inc. proudly announces the appearance of some show biz personalities in the northern town on Feb. 8, that’s next Saturday, as part of Catmon’s fiesta activities.

Dubbed An Evening with the Stars, the event features dancers Mariposa and Milagring, singer Ronnie Liang and actor-singer Carlo Aquino. The event will be held at the Pedro J. Monsanto Sports & Cultural Center.

The feast day in honor of San Guillermo de Aquitania falls on the 10th. Happy fiesta!

GMA 7’s new teleseries, Rhodora X, Carmela: Ang Pinakamagandang Babae sa Mundong Ibabaw and Paraiso Ko’y Ikaw premiered on the same day, that is, last Monday, Jan. 27.

While the first two are on prime time, the last airs right before 24 Oras. Another new series, The Borrowed Wife, piloted last week.

Stars of the four new shows were the ones that GMA 7 featured in the different activities during the Pista Senyor festivities. Rhodora X’s Jennylyn Mercado, Yasmien Kurdi, Mark Herras and Mark Anthony Fernandez visited malls in the metro to delight their fans.

The same for The Borrowed Wife’s Rafael Rossell, Pauleen Luna, Camille Prats and TJ Trinidad and Paraiso Ko’y Ikaw’s Kim Rodriguez and Kristoffer Martin. Carmela’s Marian Rivera and Alden Richards boarded the GMA 7 float during the Sinulog grand parade.

Rafael said he bonded with his relatives in Daanbantayan last Christmas and he saw the resiliency that Cebuanos, in particular, and the Filipinos, in general, are known for.

He saw how his relatives and neighbors coped with the calamities that befell them.

Camille feels privileged to be working with co-stars who are hardworking and dedicated to their craft. She describes The Borrowed Wife as one with a good concept and story that the cast can play around with their respective characters.

It’s a complicated plot that deals with deception, obsession and revenge, among others. At the helm is Gil Tijada. Camille vehemently denied rumors that she’ll soon be marching down the aisle once again (she’s has been widow a for a couple of years now).

On the other hand, when asked about his love life, Rafael, while flashing his signature toothy smile, said: “I love life—so much.” He hastens to add that he’s dating.

TJ feels happy at the way the network has been handling his career since he made the big leap in 2010. He describes his role as more of a villain and that it is both “emotionally and physically draining.”

Having been a marketing exec in the corporate world before sinking his teeth in acting, TJ plans to engage in business in the near future. He has no specifics yet as to what type of biz he’ll engage in.

My frustration during that noontime interview was the inability to chat with Pauleen Luna, who was observed to be prettier and sexier these days. Could it be love that is responsible for such a development? Most probably. Good for her.

Ejay Falcon and Chienna Filomeno are coming to Cebu on Feb. 15 for the second draw of A Million Thanks Promo of Gaisano Main, Country Mall, Balamban and Bogo. Mark the date.
