UAAP stalwart Lennon Hart Salgados dominated the 5th Queen Angela B. CDO Gold NorMin Blitz Chess Championship in Cagayan de Oro City.

The youngest in the eight-man roster, the 22-year-old Salgados defeated Nazario Ubanon in the first round then overpowered Jokorn Maestrado in the finals to pocket the top prize courtesy of Ronald “El Kapitan” Banaag.

Maestrado made it to the championship round after an upset victory over National Master Levi Mercado, the blitz tourney’s 2012 champion.

Jhonnel Balquin, who won the the blitz competition twice in the past in the absence of Salgados and NM Rustum Tolentino, failed to show up. And so did Tolentino for a still unknown reason.

“Pero ako `ning ipa-match si Lennon ug Balquin this coming April 11 kay daghan interesado ini nga tapada,” Banaag said.

Salgados said it was an honor to play against local chess idol Balquin, one of his former mentors back home before he joined the Far Eastern University Tamaraws.
