NATIONAL Master Rustum Tolentino continues to dominate the local chess front, winning the 2014 Barangay Macabalan Fiesta Open chess tournament.

Tolentino actually finished the 7-round Swiss System tourney in a tie with fellow 6-pointer Allan Cantonjos and Johnnel Balquin. But the former notched the championship trophy and the P5,000 top purse after the Bucholz tiebreaker.

“Paningkamot lang tuon mga solid chess theories then apil sab ang luck,” said Tolentino, who conquered at least three major chess competitions in Mindanao in the Year of the Wood Horse.

Cantonjos and Balquin got P3,000 and P2,000 each for occupying third and fourth, respectively.

Lyndon Lumancas tallied 5.5 points to emerge solo fourth-placer worth P1,000.

Rounding up the top-10 finishers were Bryan Jose, Ralph Dalauta, Arbs Calido, Eutemio Coquilla, Ronulfo Ranario and Jake Gonzales.

Cited for the special awards were Lorebina Carrasco III and Clyde Saraos (top 10-under), Alrenz Borres and Chino Ranario (top 14-under), Ivy Amper (top lady), Aljie Cantonjos (top junior), Jong Arroyo (top senior) and Ralph Dalauta and Arbs Calido for the top Class B honors. They received P500 apiece.

Around 60 woodpushers took part in the two-day chessfest sponsored by the Barangay Council of Macabalan in cooperation with the Philippine Guardian Brotherhood Incorporated (PBGI). (LLS)
