Macabalan chessfest gets underway today-A A +A

CLASS A players in the locality relegated to mere spectators in the recent Camp Phillips tourney will have their full wits trading pieces in the 2014 Macabalan Fiesta Open Chess Tournament which gets underway today at the Macabalan National High School.
Tournament director Rolando Gomonit, who designated Fide National Arbiter (FNA) Lorenzo Cuizon and Leo Dinglasan to run the show, said close to P20,000 in total cash prizes will be up for grabs in the two-day event.
“Medyo gigil ang mga Class A who missed the Camp Phillips tourney nga gi-exclusive sa Class B ug mga bata. Alegre `ning sa Macabalan kay timing sa among fiesta,” Gomonit told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
National Masters Levi Mercado and Rustum Tolentino were among the top-notch players in the city seen warming up yesterday at the Capitol Chess Park in the company of Paul Jardin, Basilio Pandan and Jokorn Maestrado.
“We also expect participants from the neighboring places of Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon and Iligan,” added Cuizon.
The seven-round Swiss system tournament is sponsored by the Barangay Council of brgy. Macabalan in cooperation with the Philippine Guardian Brotherhood Incorporated (PBGI).
It stakes P5,000, P3,000 and P1,000 major cash prizes for the top-3 awardees plus trophies with the third and fourth runner-up receiving P1,000 and P500 each. Six to 10th placers will settle for P300 apiece.
Category prize winners for best 10-under (boys and girls), top 14-under (boys and girls), top lady, top junior, top senior and top 2 Class B will also be given P500 each.
