LADY luck continues to smile on veteran guard Totsie Daitol.

The 44-year-old Daitol and the FS Car Care Display Eagles of team manager Ed Gustilo completed a 51-45 win over the 2 AB Scorpions to capture the 2013-2014 Dyno Cup title of the Auto Planet basketball concluded here on Tuesday night at Barangay 24’s covered court.

“Ma MVP gihapon diay `ta noh bisan tigulang na,” later said Daitol, who some weeks ago, steered the Auto Planet team of Rey Asuncion and Mel Heruela to a championship finish in Kolambog, Lapasan at the expense of Green CdeO Eagles.

The Barangay Bonbon pride Daitol said it was his 15th MVP award and probably the “sweetest of them all” as it came when he’s already at the twilight of his basketball career.

“But he (Daitol) still has the moves,” complimented last season’s Tabor Cup MVP Andit Sacabin of losing semifinalist Stronghold White Pythons.

No-nonsense defense marked the low-scoring finale that started with a thrifty 9 to 7 first quarter lead by the Scorpions of Engr. Arnel Baba.

A roller-coaster ride preceded the next quarter that saw William Butatil, Patrick Go and Bobong Cabatuan carrying the fight for the Scorpions and the foursome of Joseph Enriquez, Nicholie Quintos, RJ Siñel and Ric Noble doing the same on the other side.

Bad signs were there, however, for the Scorpions to push the panic button as starting center Giovannie Redulla—who exploded for 19 points in Game 2—was foul-troubled early.

After giving the Scorpions a 37-36 lead, Redulla picked his fourth at the turn and took the bench in just midway of the third quarter.

And while Butatil -- a scoring mess in Game 2 -- recovered his bearing in the deciding Game 3, the Scorpions’ leading scorer Marvin “John Lloyd” Neri struggled all the way to settle for only 5 points. His fastbreak lay-up that could have shattered a deadlock and gained the 2AB’s momentum for good with still over a minute left -- apparently rimmed out.

“Akong gihigda gamay kay abi nako’g molahos ang depensa (James Daitol), nihunong man diay siya,” explained Neri, adding “grabe sab kahugot ilang guwardiya sa ako, pagdawat pa lang sa bola duha na ang motabo.”

The Eagles’ top-gunner in the semifinal round, the youthful Quintos was hardly a factor also in the final half. But the other big man in their roster did the chief damage to the Scorpions’ defense.

“Big Hair” Siñel scored 10 of his 17 points in the fourth and final quarter and the ageless Daitol controlled the backcourt play to spell doom for the Scorpions’ own hunt for the elusive crown.

“It’s simply not our game. We can only look forward to the next season,” Kuya Baba told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

Tournament sponsor Reuben Sy, in the absence of club president Fred Pimentel, presided over the awards rites that followed right away.

The Eagles received P6,000, while second-placer Scorpions and third running Elabram Red Lions got P4,000 and P2,000 each also with trophies.

Most Valuable Player Daitol brought home P1,200, while Sportsmanship awardee John Vincent Cid of 2 AB Scorpions joyously took P300. Each of the Mythical Five (Totsie Daitol, Arman Bajao (Stronghold), Roger Laranjo (Dyno Tigers), William Butatil, Nicholie Quintos) and the second team (Marvin Neri, Andit Sacabin, Mon Collera (Stronghold), RJ Siñel and Arbas of Bajao Jaguars) settled for P250 apiece.

The score:

AUB Eagles 51—Siñel 17, Daitol T. 7, Enriquez 6, Quintos 6, Daitol J. 4, Laranjo 4, Gustilo 4, Noble 2, Petalvero 0, Gumpay 0, Ordonio 0.

2AB Scorpions 45—Butatil 21, Redulla 7, Go 7, Cabatuan 5, Neri 5, Cid 0, Cagalawan 0, Ortiz 0, Dela Torre 0, Salon 0, Baba 0.
