FORMER PBA hotshot Ulysses “Buboy” Tanigue, who is suffering from “extreme anemia,” finally tasted victory in many tries with the Ballpals Wolves in a very unlikely manner.

Unable to find his range from afar, the 40-year-old Tanigue had only a point to show in the knockout match that saw the Ballpals Skyhawks raining the Wolves with a combined total of twelve 3-point baskets from Jaime Rivera (4), Thirdie Dela Cruz (4), Babart Acaylar (2) and Revilla (2).

But strong defense and final half offensive by Mark Apepe, Jeff Morial, Nick Jabagat and RJ Mendoza had altogether propelled the Wolves to the next round of the Ballpals Club’s Playoff Basketball Tournament at Barangay. 24’s covered court here, following an emphatic 85-76 finish.

“Luya pa kaayo ko, though padayon akong treatment sa ospital. Gakapandol-pandol ko sa dula,” said Tanigue, who used to work the backcourt play of the fabled Purefoods Hotdog in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) League.

“We’re one of the worst teams in the elimination round. Suwerte lang nga naka-survive `mi sa Skyhawks of Kuya Ed Gaabucayan. We’ll see kon unsay paingnan sa among team in our next knockout games,” said the Wolves’ playing coach `Baby James’ Abucejo.

Other knockout matches in the first round saw the Falcons whitewashed the Mustang, 90-69; the Tamaraws eliminating the Red Lions, 70-55; the veterans-laden Dragon Petronas edging the Eagles, 73-71 and the Rattle Snakes relying on the threesome of Boning Biongcog, Elvis Pahilan and Hanginan to lead the Wizards to the exit door.

Tournament commissioner Atoy Camasura said the semifinal knockout matches would be played on at the same venue starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 1.

The Rattlesnakes will face the Tamaraws, the Wolves testing the mettle of Dragon Petronas and the top-seeded Cobras in their much-awaited showdown with the dangerous Falcons.
