Selfless love

THERE is hypocrisy in love: most claim to be selfless but our deepest desires all pour out in our lust.

Maybe this nakedness of our feelings is better. Maybe it’s better to know that when someone says I love you, we no longer enamour it with self-sacrifice; that it is for an unyielding desire for the other.

After all, what are we then creatures bounded by self-preservation instincts; the need for comfort, even the need for love, may have driven us to put these feelings to mythical proportions.

But being unapologetic about our feelings does not reduce our capacity to go beyond our limits.

Time and time again humans have shown the power to redefine what nature binds. When there is no land we make land; when we were told we cannot fly, we flew, for much as the desire for our own, we are driven fanatically by the need to exceed our boundaries.

So how do move forward with these realizations?

Are we supposed to simply abandon all hope of sincerity when feelings are on display?

Are we supposed to suspect everyone from now on?

There is no simple answer; there could be more trivial things than the honesty of the other person.

But maybe even with the idea of having someone go out of their way, even go beyond the ill-fated meanings of love and what love could be, there is enough hope out there.

The grandeurs of martyrdom are often overused, but they speak the truth for some. Maybe that is enough; maybe that is enough that we place an ideal we strive for.

After all if we are all but reduced as worlds on our own, what future does it hold for the rest of humanity?

To love another, to be with them, to bind your experiences — there is beauty in the madness of our feelings, and order in the chaos of our thoughts.
