Love Mother Earth

-A A +A

AS TIME flies, more things are added to science and technology to make our lives easier and more comfortable.

Examples are gadgets, appliances, machines and other similar things. These things are used for entertainment and communication. Today, many gadgets are released rapidly. Appliances are getting nicer, more convenient and generally better than the older ones. Not only that, we have a lot of tall buildings and factories in the urban areas. In other words, life has gone through a modernization. That is good.

However, as with everything else on this planet, there is always the other side of the coin. In short, modernization is good but it does do some bad things to the environment.

As of now, global warming is one of the thousands of problems we are facing. We suffer because we use gadgets and devices that add to the carbon footprint in nature. A lot of us do not know that the things we use which make life more comfortable are also the ones that pollute the environment.

For instance, we ride on cars to get to our destination pretty fast but the burning of fuel harms the atmosphere. Factories generally make products that benefit us but the waste materials they produce are thrown in rivers. This causes the death of underwater creatures due to pollution.

Trees are used for furniture and construction materials. However, the trees that are cut for such purposes are not replaced with new ones. This leads to deforestation. Many people think that burning garbage is all right because it lessens the amount of trash that the garbage collectors gather. But they are wrong. Burning garbage contributes to thinning of the ozone layer. We play with our tablets and touch phones but when these things get broken, they are thrown into open dumpsites, adding to the growing amount of garbage. The list goes on.

The harm that we do to nature, even though unintentionally, will come back to us.

How? Global temperatures will keep rising due to global warming. This leads to the melting of the polar ice caps. Consequently, sea levels will rise and low-lying nations will be at risk of losing parts of their land to rising seas. There is also the chance that the increased temperatures of the ocean will create super typhoons. Additionally, a number of the living things will die out because of the loss of habitat caused by pollution and deforestation. In short, we ourselves are the ones putting our world at risk.

What can we do?

Since we will inherit the Earth from our parents, we should make sure that we do not make the conditions worse than they already are. We can do our part by planting shrubs around our homes. If given the chance, we can join tree-planting activities.

Another practical thing we can do conserve water and electricity. We should learn to go easy on everything even paper! We should recycle materials. We should dig holes in our backyards to serve as compost pits instead of waiting for the garbage truck to take our trash to the open dumpsite. We should cooperate in projects that help Mother Earth like observing Earth Hour and so on.

In short, we should love Mother Earth before everything is too late! Jeric Mae C. Tomaroy
