ON Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, the people of Medina in Misamis Oriental will re-enact the passion of Christ in the town’s streets and on stage.

More than 250 out of school youths, tricycle drivers and students have been rehearsing their roles for the Hinuklog, Medina’s Lenten presentation.

The artists and production staff belonging to the Lumadnong Magdudula sa Medina (Lumagmed) mounts the pageant annually as part of efforts to promote the town as a tourist destination.

It started in the 70’s when the faithful of the San Isidro Labrador parish took to the streets as part of their evangelization. It was then the traditional Sinakulo.

Through the years, the Sinakulo gained popularity. It was later renamed as Pasyon ni Kristo but was stopped in 1991 for lack of funds. It was revived in 2011 as the Hinuklog (Reflection).

Mylene Huerto, media coordinator for the event, said the holding of the play is important for the town since it will showcase the tourism potential of the activity.

Lending a hand to Hinuklog are government agencies like the National Commission of the Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the Department of Trade and Industry, the Misamis Oriental Rural Electric Service Cooperative 2, the Department of Education, San Isidro Labrador Parish Council, Medina Rural Water and Sanitation Cooperative, and Fresh Fruit Ingredients Inc..

Hinuklog participants went through acting workshops through the NCCA. The play has one overall director and five scene directors.

“While we cannot imitate what the Lord experienced, with Hinuklog, we can deepen the consciousness of our parishioners, the message that Jesus Christ imparted to the faithful,” Filbert Reyes, Hinuklog overall director, said.
