BEATRICE Alvarez Pohl of Barangay Carmen was crowned Miss Cagayan de 2014 on Saturday night.

“It’s very overwhelming. When my name was called, it’s like a mix of everything. Happiness, relief, I felt funny, I wanted to cry and laugh. It's like a ball of emotions, I can’t even describe it,” Pohl said, recalling the moment during the coronation night.

However, she remembered feeling a sense of fulfillment.

“It was the first time that I felt like everything that has happened to me, all that I went through in my life, and all the hardships paid off. I was able to achieve this,” she added.

The German-Filipina Pohl, called Bea by her family and close friends, grew up in Cavite and came to Cagayan de Oro several years back. Since then, her love for the city grew immensely.

“I’m really happy because of the people who supported me all throughout my journey. They gave me strength, and I hope I can do them justice during my reign,” Pohl said.

A strong advocate of environmental preservation, Pohl aims to focus on in the early days of her reign.

“I would like to make an effort to help the government in implementing environmental projects especially that it is planning to implement a no-littering campaign. Also, I want to influence the youth in making education a part of their goals,” she added.

According to Pohl, one of her future plans is to work in the local Department of Foreign Affairs and maybe soon in the US Embassy.

Pohl, 21, outshone the other candidates and was awarded P50,000 when she competed in the coronation night with grace, intelligence and poise.

She also won Miss The Loop, Miss Shopwise, Miss Ororama, Miss GMA Kapuso, Miss Natasha, the Mags Casual Wear award, and the Best in Swimwear award.

First runner-up, Miss Tourism, is Sherra Mae Vacalares who brought home P30,000, while second runner-up Mitsume Aguilar, third runner-up Jessica Abines, and fourth runner-up Jane Maceda were awarded P20,000 each.

The top 5 will also receive gifts from their sponsors.

Liceo U products

Incidentally, Miss Cagayan de Oro 2013 Lucea Amadea Piatti and Beatrice Alvarez Pohl were trained by the same mentors.

Owen Jaen of Liceo de Cagayan University, Piatti and Pohl’s mentor with the Liceo team, is overjoyed on the back-to-back win of their candidates.

“I am greatly overwhelmed since the two were trained by me and the rest of the team from Liceo U. This is a remarkable feat since both are also titleholders of Mutya ng National Prisaa in 2012 and 2013, respectively. They represented Liceo and region 10 during those times,” Jaen said, proud of Pohl’s win.

According to her mentor, Pohl was a timid girl, yet she was determined to win.

“Tonight, I saw Bea metamorphosed into a radiant woman, confident of herself and with the drive to get the crown. From a timid girl, but a really good student at that, what I saw in her tonight is that she is now ready to serve her city,” he added.

Grand soirée

The pageant, attended by sponsors, government officials, past queens of the city, title holders, and national and local celebrities, not only boasted of a star-studded event but also a grand stage display.

Crystal chandeliers and luxurious fabrics draped the stage, and the guests described it as the grandest Miss Cagayan de Oro Coronation Night so far.

Clay Tan and Chuck Go, event stylists of Accent Cagayan, the team behind the luxurious stage décor, were applauded for working their magic at the Lim Ket Kai Atrium set.

“For this Miss Cagayan de Oro Coronation, we aim to level up and be recognized with having the same leverage with the national competitions. Not only do we aim for candidates that of ‘complete package’ but also a set to boast so far than the past competitions,” said Glenn Cabaral, coronation night director.
