DUE to an overused tire, a passenger jeepney rammed into a tree that brought all of its passengers and the driver to the hospital Wednesday morning in Barangay Kasinglot, Tagoloan town in Misamis Oriental.
A report from the Tagoloan municipal police station said 18 passengers were injured following a Jasaan liner jeepney with plate number KJV-331 drove into a mahogany tree. The driver was identified as Resbert Ronquillo.
Police Inspector Maricris Mulat, Tagoloan police chief, told Sun*Star Cagayan de Oro the jeepney came from Jasaan and was on its way to Cagayan de Oro when its right front tire exploded along the national highway in Tagoloan around 9 a.m.
Ronquillo told Mulat during the investigation that he tried to steer the vehicle after its wheel blew up to prevent further damage.
He admitted that the decades-old jeepney had thinning tires and had already lost its traction.
"Wala jud nako nadala. Gibangga na lang nako ang kahoy para molihay sa mas dako nga damage (I could no longer control it. I slammed the jeepney into a tree to avoid further damage)," Ronquillo said in a TV interview.
Maricel Macapagal, owner of the jeepney, vowed to extend financial assistance to the victims.
Authorities detained Roquillo at the Tagoloan police detention cell who will possibly face reckless imprudence resulting to multiple physical injuries.
Mulat reminded motorists especially those bringing passengers to regularly check the condition of their vehicles to prevent them from road accidents.
"It helps a lot to check your brake and tires and the entire condition of your vehicle," Mulat noted.
At press time, the families of the victims have not yet talked to the police for any possible settlement with the vehicle’s operator.
