THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said Tuesday it will soon conduct a public hearing on the fare increase petition filed by the Transport Federation of Cagayan de Oro (Trafeco) last month.

It is in public hearing where everyone can participate in the discussion of the fare hike petition.

“They have submitted the petition last month and I have forwarded this to the central office since it has to evaluate on the matter yet,” LTFRB regional director Mandangan Darimbang said.

The petition was to add P1.00 to the current fare in the city which will follow the fare in Luzon.

“Before, supposedly, we were to have P8 for the regular fare, but Trafeco asked to lower this down diminishing 50 cents from it hence P7.50. But now, they wish to follow Regions III, IV and National Capital Region’s current fare which is P8.50,” Darimbang said by phone Tuesday.

Affordability to commuters and equality to the operators are two of the things that LTFRB will weigh during the public hearing, he said.

“People should really be there since everyone will be affected when fare increases,” he added.

Another transport group, however, opposes Trafeco’s petition since they see it as useless and meaningless.

Gas price discount

“When fare hike increases, there is a great possibility that oil companies will also ask for an increase. Since there is an oil-deregulation law, basically, when oil companies increase, again, wala na sad ta’y mabuhat,” said Ringo Lago, secretary general of the Solidarity of Transport Alliance in Region 10-Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper At Operator Nationwide (Starex-Piston).

Starex-Piston has also filed another petition last month where a P6 discount in gas stations should be implemented nationwide.

“We think this is really the answer to our problems. When we increase fares, the burden will be passed on to the commuters and I am sure we will hear a lot of complains because of it. So to solve the problem, fares are still the same but there should be a (fuel) discount to us, drivers,” Lago said.

The petition for a P6 discount is already endorsed to the office of President Benigno Aquino III, Lago confirmed.

“We will continue doing mass actions and rallies until they will implement this. This is the only thing we are asking for. I hope the government would give a budge on this,” he added.

Starex-Piston is planning on conducting a Mindanao-wide transport strike next week, Lago said.
