TWO government soldiers died while three were wounded in armed encounters with the New People's Army (NPA) rebels Friday morning in different areas of Misamis Oriental, the military said.

Major Christian Uy, 4th Infantry Division (4ID) spokesperson, told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro Friday afternoon that government soldiers engaged the Maoist insurgents on three occasions in a span of 24 hours at sitio Kapatagan, Barangay Umagos in Lagonglong and Barangay Kibanban in Balingasag.

Uy said the identities of the two killed soldiers have yet to be revealed by the 4ID.

"The names of the casualties are still withheld since we are still informing the families of the victims," he said on Friday.

According to Uy, the 4ID received an intelligence report that the members of the NPA have a hideout in the area so they conducted combat operations.

The first clash happened around 5:34 a.m. in Lagonglong where three soldiers of the 58th Infantry Battalion were wounded.

After an hour, army troops who were clearing the landing zone for the helicopter that will pick up the wounded soldiers got into a firefight with the communist rebels that led to one soldier killed in action.

The third clash occurred around 8:30 a.m. in Balingasag that led to another casualty from the same group of soldiers.

The military said some NPA members were wounded because of the blood stains found in the area as residents had seen these rebels carrying their wounded comrades.
