Private schools train teachers for Grade 9 students

ON THE third year of K-12’s implementation, teachers from private schools are now gearing up for the incoming Grade 9 students for academic year 2014-2015.

Kris Exzur Barcelona, head of promotions and marketing, said that the trainings are mainly on delivering the new curriculum for Grade 9 students, and exposing them to the learning facilities intended for them.

“It’s on the change of content and on the target skills,” Barcelona said.


“If we say content, all the pedagogical skills must be changed.”

Trainings offered at the 2014 In-service Training (Inset) for Grade 9 Teachers from private schools in Lourdes College from May 12-14 are for Mathematics, English, Filipino, Araling Panlipunan and Science.

Teacher-participants are divided among the subjects they specialized in.

Participants come from private schools of the city, Camiguin, Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, and as far as Marawi City and the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

The training is sponsored by the Fund Assistance for Private Schools (FAPE), a government arm for private schools.


Barcelona said one challenge for the Grade 9 curriculum is the readiness of the teachers to implement it.

However, the greatest challenge “is after Grade 10” or the senior high school where there are new lessons and subjects, some of them being taught in college.

More challenges are to be faced by the higher education institutions (HEIs) where there will be a gap of two years without freshmen in their institutions.

Next school year, only the fourth year level is left in high school.
Private schools have the autonomy on their curriculum, even to have elective subjects, said Barcelona. However, implementing K-12 is now compulsory to all schools.

The same training for all public schools in the city will also be held at Liceo de Cagayan University.
