TO AFFORD the poor of socialized health care, thousands of beneficiaries in this city received proof of their coverage of the Philippine Health Insurance (PhilHealth) from the city government on Wednesday.

Dr. Ma. Lourdes Gaane, City Health Insurance officer, said that 50,000 beneficiaries will receive their PhilHealth cards while the 40,000 existing PhilHealth members through the “Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program” under National Household Targeting System of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Department of Health (DOH) received their membership data record (MDR).

More than 1,000 barangay officials, health workers and barangay nutrition scholars received and witnessed the PhilHealth cards distribution on behalf of the beneficiaries in the 80 barangays of the city.

Mayor Oscar Moreno, who personally distributed the health insurance identification cards, said that the City Government’s gesture was to ensure that the poorest of the poor can avail of hospitalization and other health services, and that part of his responsibility is to deliver basic services beyond politics.

Moreno said that despite the city council’s disapproval of his proposed number of would-be PhilHealth beneficiaries, he pursued his intention of distributing 50,000 membership cards to the poor who need not worry of healthcare expenses when needed.

Recently, the City Council disapproved the budget proposal of Moreno for PhilHealth universal insurance coverage and only approved 25,000 instead of 50,000 beneficiaries.

The City Council denied Moreno’s proposal for reasons that only a small percentage could benefit from PhilHealth since only a few get sick and hospitalized, thus it is a waste of government money.

“I cannot let the poor suffer because of politics and not accord them the basic services, especially that which concerns their health,” Moreno said.

The City Government allocated about P120 million for the PhilHealth membership.

Abamin partylist Representative Maximo Rodriguez, city administrator Roy Raagas, councilors Candy Darimbang, Zaldy Ocon, Eric Salcedo, Teodulfo Lao Jr., Roger Abaday, City Health Officer Dr. Fe Bongcas, PhilHealth personnel led by Marlon Arrabaca, and city officials assisted the mayor in the distribution of the PhilHealth cards.
