CAGAYAN de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno, in his speech on Wednesday’s Araw ng Kagitingan commemoration, urged the people in the City Government to work together as heroes to avoid paralyzing the functions of a local government.

“Heroism also comes in working together for the good of the people. Real strength comes through partnership, not as one but by working as a team. Our heroes fought for our country not only for themselves but for the future generation to be free from domination, control and manipulation,” Moreno said.

Moreno furthered on heroism and how people especially in the government should emulate from the examples of these heroes.

“We had our heroes, I hope we have drawn lessons and be encouraged from what they have done. The question now is: how committed are we to do what is right? We respect the system, that is meant for check and balance but it should not be abused. It should not be used to paralyze our local government,” he said.

Moreno hopes that the occasion such as the “Araw ng Kagitingan” would awaken some members of the city council.

“I hope in occasions like this, it will awaken some; In spite of the limited condition and the lack of cooperation since unfortunately they (the opposition councilors) control the council, but we have the support from the national level and our lawmakers in Congress. There will be time for politics, what’s important now is to help one another to move forward for a better Cagayan de Oro,” he said.

Congressional representative Maximo Rodriguez of Abante Mindanao or ABAMIN in his message called on the members of the city council to cooperate.

“I call on the city council to help; it’s about time for them to give back to our city. As our heroes laid their lives, we need heroes that would work hard for our city,” said Rodriguez.

Cagayan de Oro 2nd district Representative Rufus Rodriguez said the event is not only through giving respect and recognition to fallen heroes.

“This celebration is not only about respecting and in giving out recognition. Heroism is not only about dying, but through simple acts of heroism for our country. Through giving the outmost service to our people by doing more work that would benefit our country,” he said.
