MEMBERS of the press in the Cagayan de Oro City appraised the operations of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) and the need to accurately disseminate information of impending weather disturbances to the public.

The media orientation focused on the understanding of the color-coded alert signals and the protocol in information gathering of incoming changes in weather condition.

CDRRMO’s weather specialist Vergel Lago said that communities in the city, particularly in disaster prone areas, need to be aware of the warnings given them by authorities.

“It is important that communities understand the warning advisories that the CDRRMO gives out every time low pressure area (LPA) or storm approaches in the Philippine area of responsibility through the media so that they will be alerted to take precautionary measures,” Lago said.

The assigned colors indicate the levels of preparation a weather disturbance might create along its path.

For instance, CDRRMO said that color Yellow would warn communities to be vigilant as the storm approaches, and color Orange would advise for an early evacuation preferably of children, women, elderly and persons with disability. If alert level turns Red, all must have been evacuated to safety.

“We need you, the media, to help us make our residents understand the color-coding of the alert levels so that we will minimize the loss of lives or zero casualties during storms or flooding,” Lago said.

CDRRMO also directed members of the media where to get information in the internet so that they will be updated of the current weather bulletin, but reminded them that only the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has the authority to give out information on the weather disturbances that come to the country.
