ISIDRO Baricuatro, a carpenter, was in haste for work Wednesday morning that he opted to stand on the step of the rear of the multicab while clinging to one of its bar as the vehicle made its way to downtown here when all of a sudden a speeding truck rammed into its rear along the national highway in Purok 7, a hilly area in Barangay Puerto.

Because of the impact, Baricuatro died on the spot due to serious injuries, according to a Puerto police report prepared by Inspector Jude Jano Evangelista, the deputy station commander.

The multicab, bearing license plate no. KVY 874 and driven by Junrey Escobido, was filled with passengers, some of whom bore injuries and are now undergoing treatment at the local medical facility in Puerto.

The cargo truck, with license plate no. KCW 341, registered to Mega Farm Corporation and driven by Leonilo Lusac, was loaded with 43 heads of hogs.

In an interview with this paper at the Puerto police Wednesday, Lusac said the truck he was driving came from the Mega Farm facility in Barangay Sil-ipon, Libona town, Bukidnon, and was bound for the animal slaughterhouse in Barangay Cugman.

Lusac tried to avoid bumping into the multicab by overtaking it but the truck skidded off and hit the rear of the multicab as it slammed into Baricuatro causing his instant death.

For his part, Escobido said he pulled over the multicab to pickup a passenger and when he started to bring it back on the road, the truck bumped into it.

Lusac recalled the incident happened so fast that he didn’t notice Baricuatro was hit by the collision while Escobido was unaware that one of his passengers died.

Due to impact, the truck’s windshield was shattered.

Based on police report, the injured passengers are Jhud Michael Mehado, Jennifer Carido, Dailyn Tolonia, Jaycell May Lolocan, Caren Maribohok, Virgilio Tono, Narban Baylos, Dayter Kasagnap, Mark Lloyd Biasong, Joan Pagaran and a certain Manlunas.

While some of the multicab’s passengers sustained injuries, the 43 hogs loaded on the truck were all safe.

Lusac said the hogs were retrieved by his co-workers after the incident, while the passengers were brought to the Puerto Community Hospital, a few hundred meters away from the accident site.

Lusac denied he attempted to flee from the accident saying he hailed the first jeepney that passed by and surrendered himself to the Puerto police fearing that bystanders would gang up on him.

Aniceto Bandilan, Lusac’s aide, assisted the casualties in bringing them to the hospital.

Lusac said in his more than 16 years as a driver, it was the first time that he was involved in a road accident.

The Mega Farm management has promised to extend assistance to the casualties shouldering the hospital and mortuary expenses, the police report said.
