IN CELEBRATION of the Fire Prevention Month this March, the Bureau of Fire Prevention (BFP) in Northern Mindanao has recognized anew the contribution of Cagayan de Oro City’s volunteer firefighters.

Fire Superintendent Lyndee Lauzon, BFP-Northern Mindanao director, said the efforts of the firefighters belonging to private groups and companies are important to BFP’s thrust, as they contribute in responding to emergencies and helping the bureau in its education campaign.

“Para sa ako, immeasurable ang ilang contribution sa pagserbisyo sa katawhan, dili masukod. For every year, on regular basis, I acknowledge volunteer fire brigades. Dili namo mabuhat kung kami lang, because the BFP depends on equipment. We are equipment-based,” Lauzon said.

“As long as their existence magpabilin, hinaut nga magpadayon sila sa ilang serbisyo. Pasalamatan gayud nako sila,” he added.

The fire brigades of Graphic, Gaisano and Chinese fire volunteers are among the volunteer groups in the city that coordinate with the BFP when responding to emergency situations especially fire breakout.

Lauzon said the month-long celebration started with a motorcade Saturday and it was joined by different government agencies and fire brigades in Cagayan de Oro.

He said the government chose the month of March since it is during summer season that most fire incidents occur.

“Ang Marso man gud sugod na sa summer season sa Pilipinas, and we know for a fact, tag-init, taas ang frequency sa sunog during summer,” Lauzon told reporters during the Fire Prevention month opening on Saturday.

“Nakita pud sa mga proponents nga sa summer daghan (fire incidents) para ma-consicous sila (public) aron usab ma-minimize ang insidente sa sunog. Maoy among gina-emphasized, but it has to be practiced in a day-to-day basis,” he added.

Lauzon said there would be a series of activities this month such as radio guestings, lectures with barangay officials and concerned groups in the towns and cities in the region, and to intensify the conduct of inspections of buildings and other structures.

“This will be a simultaneous activity within the whole region,” he added.

He appealed to the public to be cautious with their daily activities against breaks of fires in their respective offices and establishments.
