FOR rendering heroism and bravery in action, police officers in Northern Mindanao were awarded medals of honor during the regional office’s 23rd founding anniversary at Camp Vicente Alagar in Barangay Lapasan on Monday.

Superintendent Michael Pareja, Police Regional Office-Northern Mindanao (PRO-10) spokesman, said six police officers received the medal of honor including PO1 Oliver Espira who was wounded during a skirmish with wanted persons in Poblacion 4, Sitio Kalayaan, barangay Gamal in Sapad, Lanao del Norte on February 12, which resulted in a brief exchange of gunfire that killed the suspect identified as Nasser Macari alias Commander Tigre.

Pareja said Macari, the leader of the Macari group, a gang believed to have been engaged in kidnapping with ransom and murder, is the number 18 most wanted person in the region. Two of Macari’s members also died.

The encounter resulted in the confiscation of one unit M79 homemade grenade launcher, two units of caliber 30 Springfield, and M1 Garand rifle with live ammunition.

Espira received the “Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting,” while Superintendent Jerry Tambis, Senior Inspector Julius Clark Macariola, Inspector Alexander Adamat, Senior Police Officer 4 Camilo Matos, and SPO1 Michael Solarta received the “Medalya ng Kagalingan.”

Espira also received the “Medalya ng Kagitingan.”

Pareja said the awardees’ determination and courage is a clear manifestation of their dedication and professionalism that contributes to the positive performance of the Philippine National Police (PNP) regional command.

The awardees, with confirmation from Senior Supt. Jerry Linsagan, the officer-in-charge for regional chief directorial staff, and Senior Supt. Orlando Beñas, acting chief of the regional personnel and human resource development division, “displayed the highest commitment to duty, worthy of emulation by their peers, not only in the regional office, but also in the entire PNP (organization),” Pareja said.
