EIGHT soldiers were injured when a military vehicle they boarded heading to Butuan City collided with a cargo truck in front of Del Monte Philippines Inc. (DMPI) pineapple cannery in Barangay Bugo Wednesday night.

The soldiers are part of the additional forces for deployment to intensify the military’s anti-insurgency operations in Caraga Region.

Puerto police records showed that the soldiers are members of the Philippine Army’s 4th Infantry Division based in Camp Edilberto Evangelista in Barangay Patag here.

The report read that the 6x6 military truck had a mechanical malfunction causing it to ram to another truck filled with gravel.

Injured due to the impact of the collision were Staff Sergeant Michael Domanales, Corporal Rolando Manicab, Technical Sergeant Adrlyn Bolivar, Privates Mark Diaz and Michael Menderes belonging to the Scout Ranger Battalion and Sergeant Jesser Bernales, and Corporals Rudivino Canunayon and Charlie Bulay, also members of the 4ID.

The bruised soldiers were immediately brought to the Puerto Community Hospital for treatment and were later transferred to the military hospital in Camp Evangelista.

Bernales who suffered fractures in the leg was transferred to Northern Mindanao Medical Center.

Apart from those hurt, three M16 A1 colt rifles were also damaged during the accident.

In an interview on Testigo Thursday evening, Dario Lim, the driver of the cargo truck, said he saw the speeding military vehicle approaching his truck as he waited for impact.

The truck was registered to Southern Speed Enterprises based in Batangas City.

Both representatives from the 4ID and the cargo truck verbally agreed to settle the matter at the 4ID headquarters.

Also, in an interview on Testigo Thursday evening, Captain Christian Uy, 4ID spokesman, said the soldiers who have been injured are just a small fraction of the entire force that will be deployed in Caraga Region.

He added that the entire scout ranger battalion would be sent for the military operations in the region against the New People’s Army (NPA).
