AMID the skyrocketing unemployment rate in the country that reaches 12 million, the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) in Northern Mindanao declared that 95.7 percent of the labor force in the region is employed.

Criste Perfecto, planning officer of Dole, said, “In 20 members of the workforce, 19 are employed while five of those 19 are underemployed.”

She added that the underemployed are those whose quality of work cannot sustain for their daily cost of living, or the wage is not enough.

She said “workforce” refers to the people who are looking for jobs, and those that do not search for jobs are not included in their computation for the number of workforce.

Employment program

Perfecto explained that although unemployment is prevalent on a national level, the region has not been affected because of its programs on employment.

She said the matching between the academe and the jobs available in the region prevented the effects of the unemployment rate increase nationwide.

“We are trying as much as possible that the academe and the employment generators in the region will match,” said Perfecto.

She added that through labor market information, the workforce will know the available career options in the region.

Although there is an increase in unemployment in the national level, it varies in the regions, Perfecto said.

The top employment generators in the region are agribusiness, cyber services, health and wellness, hotel and restaurant, mining, construction, among others.

According to a Dole-Northern Mindanao, this year around 23,350 workers in the agri-fishery sector are needed, 17,067 for the automotive or land transport sector, and around 33,000 for the construction.
