WHAT started as a fun outing with friends turned tragic when a 13-year-old boy drowned to death Saturday afternoon in Cagayan de Oro’s riverbank in Zone 7, Barangay Carmen.

It was Jay Manla’s first time to go swimming with his peers in the river since his parents would not allow because he didn’t know how to swim.

Manla, a resident of Capaz in sitio Macanhan, Carmen, was with four companions enjoying the river’s water when the incident happened.

His body was found a few kilometers away from where the group went swimming by a group of children gathering garbage at the riverside.

The Carmen police station recorded three boys went missing Saturday evening, but it was found out that only Manla failed to get home.

According to Manla’s friends, three of them almost drowned but only Manla didn’t make it.

Manla’s mother Maria Lourdes said that her son had been asking for her permission repeatedly to go swimming with his friends since it was the weekend.

“I didn’t allow him since he didn’t know how to swim),” Maria Lourdes told reporters.

A young boy, who was out boating with his pals in the river, recalled how they recovered Manla’s body.

“We dragged him by the hand as my friends paddled for the shore,” the lad, whose name was withheld, related to reporters.

Manla wore nothing but underwear when his body was retrieved, the boy said.

His body was covered with banana leaves and his eyes already bloated when found, a resident who responded to the riverside said.

The Carmen police informed the victim’s family that Manla that the Scene of the Crime Operatives (Soco) would do an autopsy, the parents declined believing there was no foul play involved.

“It was obvious no one drowned him. He just drowned. He just didn’t know how to swim,” Maria Lourdes said.

She said they searched for her son for two nights.

On Monday morning, they went to a beach resort in Barangay Bonbon following a report from a neighbor, but the search turned out empty.

The victim’s father got a call from his supervisor informing him that a body near Carmen riverside was found as reported on radio.
