AT LEAST 1,000 women’s rights activists, Tropical Storm Sendong survivors, and members of different grassroots groups will launch a simultaneous gathering of “One Billion Rising” on February 14 in Cagayan de Oro.
Rhodura Bulosan of Gabriela Women’s Party-Northern Mindanao said, in a statement, that the event will carry a wide range of women’s issues like: physical abuse to economic and political rights violations.
The “One Billion Rising,” which will be held in Iligan, Malaybalay, and Gingoog cities, is a global initiative that aims to protect women’s rights. The Cagayan de Oro leg of the gathering will be held from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Magsaysay Park.
Bulosan said the event will also coincide with the 15th anniversary of The Vagina Monologues in the Philippines with the New Voice Company, Gabriela and the Gabriela Women’s Party to lead the Philippine counterpart of the global campaign.
“Serious violations against women and children continue even with the existence of Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act,” she said.
Based on statistics, Bulosan said approximately one woman is beaten by her partner every 43 minutes while one child is battered every hour.
“A woman or child is harassed every four hours and it was even committed by some men in uniform,” she said. (Abigail Malalis)
