THE City Government of Cagayan de Oro is bent on embarking on a reforestation project to prevent further environmental destruction, said Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya.

Nacaya proposed for a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the management of a 50-hectare portion of Forest Land Grazing Management Agreement (FGMA) under 08-2007 situated in Sition Laguilay, Barangay Balubal, for the city’s reforestation project.

Nacaya said the City Government will partner with the DENR in identifying lands for purposes of planting and growing trees.

Along with the said proposed ordinance, Nacaya also considered the passage of another ordinance mandating and assigning all quarry operators to plant and grow trees along the 50-hectare portion of FGMA.

“We will be directing all quarry operators not just to plant trees but to grow it as one of the requirements or compliance in applying or renewing their permits,” Nacaya said.

The committee on Environmental Sanitation and Pollution Control Board (ESPCB) reportedly noted recycled pictures of tree planting requirements attached in the renewals of permit.

“Other observations include recycled pictures attached in their renewals of permit. To monitor the growing of trees, let’s put it to 50 hectares so that Clenro will be able to supervise,” Nacaya said.

He said the areas assigned for the operators will be closely monitored as it is within the city reforestation project.

“They should take care of the permit privilege so that the city will be able to monitor the operators’ compliance to the tree planting requirement,” Nacaya said.
