AN ice cream dessert that is a favorite all over the world, the sundae was said to originate in the US. And several places “claimed” to have started it which includes the state of Wisconsin, Louisiana, Illinois, Ohio and NY.

It consists of a scoop or scoops of ice cream that is topped with a syrup or sauce. Then again covered with a variety of delicious stuffs like sprinkles, whipped cream, nuts of all kinds, fresh, frozen or dried fruits.

Ice cream flavor that is well-loved is vanilla, followed by chocolate and strawberry.

However, because we are a tropical country, we have more exotic ice cream flavors and this may include mango, durian, ube, halo-halo, fruit salad and many more. Aren’t we lucky?

Americans will normally have vanilla, strawberry and chocolate if three flavors is the norm.

An enormous whipped cream topping then covers the ice cream. Well, I am exaggerating, of course!

Syrups can include chocolate (most popular, of course!), strawberry, caramel, butterscotch and some fruit sauce although fresh sliced fruits are more preferred like peaches, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc.

For us, we would choose mango (my favorite and I am sure, a lot of you, too!), banana, pineapple, jackfruit, and I guess I would love to have durian, too! That would really be awesome!

So, where do you think banana split came from?

Banana split is made of three scoops of ice cream (chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, what else?) in an elongated dish, side by side between 2 slices of banana which is sliced lengthwise.

It is then covered with chocolate syrup, topped with crushed pineapple topped with chocolate syrup.
Each scoop is individually garnished with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry, although I see peaches being used also in this impeccable dessert.

And of course, we call them “fruit sundaes.”

Another exciting mix of hot and cold sundae would be the “hot fudge” sundaes.

Technically, a scoop or more that is topped with a hot chocolate fudge or sauce.

Often time, capped with a little whipped cream and ultimately crowned with long-stemmed maraschino cherry!

Classic sundae is made with vanilla ice cream, covered with a flavored syrup or sauce, whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. As simple as that.

And of course, it can be named differently depending on the sauce used like chocolate, butterscotch, caramel, strawberry, etc.

Brownie sundae. Naturally, it uses brownies, vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, peanuts, and whipped cream. This is extremely rich! Sharing it with a love one would be perfect!

Now, what else can we add on this mind-provoking dessert?

Let’s see. Additional crunch can be added like a wafer cookie, Oreo cookie, peanut butter cookie or even Graham cookie. Maybe some cereals like rice crispies?

Crushed candies would be nice. Marshmallows? M&M’s or any chocolate candies or chocolate-covered cookies like Kit-kat would add flair to this seemingly lush and opulent sweet course!

What about locally produced sweets as toppings, like banana chips? Peanut brittle? Peanut kisses? Turrones? Cassava chips? Rosquillos? Otap?

A pinoy version of the sundae might include the use of sliced or chopped suman, kiping, bibingka, cassava, banana turrones, palitaw, peanut turon as toppings with locally well-loved ice cream mentioned earlier like ube, mango, durian, langka, macapuno, etc.

And instead of using the regular glass, maybe we can present it in a banana leaf?

Possibilities are endless. Well, I guess it is time for me to head to the ref for my own sundae version!
