CLAD in their Filipiniana and barongs, SM City Cagayan de Oro admin and staff joined in the commemoration of the 116th Independence day of the Philippines on June 12, 2014.

“For several years, we commemorate independence day in all 49 SM malls nationwide,” Ivy Guantero, SM CdO’s PR Manager, said.

“Independence day celebration is a yearly thing at SM.”

A parade at SM mall grounds followed by a flag raising ceremony signaled the day’s activity.

Catalino E. Chan III, regional director of the Department of Tourism – 10 and the key speaker of the event, invited everyone to honor the 116 years of Philippine Independence and enjoy the day with the family. “Be proud of being Filipino. Be proud of being Kagay–anon. Because we might not be the best now, but we will surely be the best in the years to come.”

Later in the event, various performances highlighting Filipino songs and dances by the Liceo de Cagayan dance troupe and the DOT singing ambassadors entertained the audience.

Another highlight of the morning was the unveiling of the centerpiece.

A heart – shaped Philippine flag made up of pastels from VjANDEP served as the centerpiece. Last year, the centerpiece was also from VjANDEP and designed into a Philippine map.

A photo booth decorated with cookies and cheese sticks from the Culinary Institute of Cagayan de Oro also stood with the Philippine Flag centerpiece.

Independence day was not only entertaining for the mall shoppers, discounts awaited them as well. SM held the “Pinoy Fun Sale,” a mall wide sale, just for the day.

In the afternoon during the Independence day celebration, Pinoy Fashion, a fashion show that featured the works of Designer Assembly’s (DA) designers Boogie Musni – Rivera, Mark Magallanes, Kiko Domo and Mavy Cooper de Leon. The local designers presented their “Barong and Filipiniana” outfits adding to it a touch of modernity.

Plus, a surprise number from the staff.

“Later, there was a flash mob involving SM employees. This was something new this year.” Guantero added. And true enough, the mall guard, salesladies and janitors started singing, inviting the crowd to sing tagalog and bisaya songs with them.

Independence day celebration ended with the distribution of VjANDEP pastels to the audience.

The series of activities was attended by the SM admin and staff, representatives from the Cagayan de Oro Federation of Senior Citizen’s Association, and the mall shoppers.

With the whole event prepared for the public’s delight, SM City indeed “got it all for you.”
