Her openness to the Holy Spirit

IN THE history of salvation, the Holy Spirit has a tremendously significant role in connection with the Son of God and Mary, the mother of Jesus. Our Catholic faith teaches us that “Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary…” This mystery has been accomplished through the openness of Mary to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Her openheartedness made her vulnerable to the will of the heavenly Father who sent His only begotten Son Jesus to redeem us borne out of His great love for all of us. Mary accepted wholeheartedly to do the will of the Father. She opened her heart with utmost generosity and steadfast faith that impelled her to give her “FIAT” even to such a mystery beyond her understanding. The joys and sorrows she experienced in accomplishing her marvelous task as Mother of God and our Mother, too, leave us a legacy to follow the imprints of her footsteps.

Mother Ignacia mirrored Mary’s openness to the Holy Spirit.

S. Maria Anicia Co, RVM, in her book “A Lamp to our Path” aptly delineated the openness of the Servant of God to the Holy Spirit as follows: “A fundamental aspect of the openness of Mother Ignacia’s spirituality is openness to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Through her openness to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, her adventurous character and natural sense of discovery did not lead to recklessness or foolhardiness.

Mother Ignacia’s courageous stance was rooted in this openness. Allowing herself to be led by the Spirit, she found new ways of looking at her experiences, at things, people and events in her life. She experienced God, drawing her beyond the limits of her own situation. As she continued to be open to the promptings of the Spirit, she saw the different events of her life fitted into God’s loving designs for her. This openness which is rooted in faith, made her eager to daily discover the will and action of God in her life.” (p. 90)

A valiant woman that Mother Ignacia is, she was firm and honest in her decisions, invoking the Holy Spirit in the posture of discernment. Never for a moment must this servant of God have looked back her past to dwell idly on it. Instead, she moved forward and nourished the foundation she has established with extraordinary firmness and steadfastness that up to now we remember her as a valiant woman who did not succumb to the untoward events in her life.

Rather she left a legacy to the consecrated women of God who call her their revered Foundress and Mother to be faithful to their commitment to God who never falters in lifting them up when they fall. How true it is that discerning before we make our decisions we have to invoke the help of the Holy Spirit for enlightenment. In doing this as did Venerable Ignacia del Espiritu Santo we can be sure that the truth will always prevail. May the Lord let her compassionate love shine brightly on us all as we await the day when the beatification of this Servant of God becomes reality.

Please submit your testimonies of experiences of the God-given intercessory power of Venerable Ignacia del Espiritu Santo to any RVM Sisters. Thank you.
