MANILA - Malacañang lauded Thursday night the Philippine basketball team for defeating Senegal in the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Sevilla, Spain.

"We join our people in proudly celebrating the triumph of Gilas Pilipinas over Senegal in the FIBA World Cup," Presidential Communications Operation Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a text message to reporters.

"They played with grit and determination, demonstrating the can-do attitude that has propelled the Philippines to being the fastest growing economy in the region," he added.

For the first time in 40 years, the Philippines won in the world stage after nipping Senegal, 81-79, in overtime on Thursday.

The Nationals capped their World Cup stint with 1-4 record but not after giving fancied squads Croatia, Argentina, Greece and Puerto Rico a run for their money.

Next stop for the Filipino cagers is the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea in mid-September, bringing with them the mission to end the country's 52-year gold medal drought. (SDR/Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
