MUNTINLUPA City Representative Rodolfo Biazon lauded Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. for ordering the Philippine Peacekeeping contingent to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (Undof) in Syria not to surrender and defend their post while being surrounded by Syrian rebels.
In his letter to Catapang on Monday, Biazon said that the AFP chief's directive to the peacekeepers "not to surrender their firearms, instead defend their position ad uphold the mandate of the UN to keep the peace within the area of operation showed a manifest of display of the excellent qualities expected from a commander in the performance of his two fundamental tasks; the accomplishment of the mission and the promotion of the morale and welfare of the men".
"Indeed, your exhortation to our Peacekeepers regarding their sworn duty inspired and motivated them to take actions that I likewise view to be commendable when they were able themselves from the situation they were in without any casualty," the letter read.
The chairman of the House committee on national defense and security said Catapang and Filipino Peacekeepers displayed the well-known sterling qualities of a Filipino soldier who in adverse situations, is able to acquit himself with honor and dedication to duty worthy of emulation by their peers in the profession of arms.
"In these times when there is an apparent need by our country for more heroes, it is my privilege to state that you all filled the lack. Verily, your actions made us proud to be Filipinos and I extend this commendation in behalf of a grateful nation," said Biazon who is a retired AFP chief of staff.
Biazon filed on Monday two House Resolutions -- one commending the peacekeepers and Catapang and another asking for investigation to precluding its repetition and ensuring the continuing safety and security of members of Philippine contingents to Peacekeeping Forces organized by the UN in pursuit to world peace.
