CEBU CITY -- The body of a missing 15-year-old boy (earlier reported as 16 years old) was found floating on the shores of Sitio Mahayahay Dos in the village of Pasil in this city around 6 a.m. Friday.

Rowen Abellaneda, of Sawang Calero village, was reported missing after he had gone swimming with his five classmates on Thursday.

Police Officer 3 Geoffrey Gutual, of the Cebu City Police Office Homicide Section, said Abellaneda tried to save two of his friends when he was swept away by the strong current brought by the heavy downpour around 4 p.m. Thursday.

The companions of Abellaneda were rescued by the city's disaster office and other rescuers from the Bureau of Fire Protection.

The heavy rains caused rivers to overflow and flooded many areas in the cities of Cebu and Mandaue, resulting in a monstrous traffic that left commuters and motorists stranded on the road. [Read the related story.]

The Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council also rescued in the village of Apas an eight-year-old boy from Sitio Calvary who was also swept by the current in the river.

Eduardo Benting, who was on his way home from school, had to cross a river to reach his house. (Sunnex)
