SUBIC BAY FREEPORT ZONE -- The Department of Health (DOH) reported on Thursday almost 600 new cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the month of July en route to establishing a new record high in the country.

Based on the July 2014 Philippine HIV and AIDS Registry Report, 585 new HIV cases were recorded that month.

"The number is 30 percent higher compared to the same period last year, which was 449," said the DOH report. "(It is also) the highest number of cases ever reported in a month."

Out of the 585 new cases, 49 have progressed already to full-blown AIDS cases.

Seventeen, on the other hand, died last July, said the DOH-NEC.

A total of 551 cases (94 percent) of the new cases were acquired through sexual transmission, mostly from the men-having-sex-with-men (MSM) population, which accounted for 451 cases or 82 percent.

Homosexual contact was responsible for 276 cases (50 percent); followed by bisexual contact with 175 cases (32 percent); and 100 cases (18 percent) from heterosexual contact.

Injecting drug use meanwhile accounted for the transmission of 34 new cases.

A total of 60 new cases among overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), meanwhile, have been reported with all but one coming from sexual transmission. The other one was a result of injecting drug use transmission.

Heterosexual contact was on top among OFWs with 27 cases (45 percent) while bisexual and homosexual contact had 17 (28 percent) and 16 (27 percent) cases, respectively.

The number also brings to 3,399 the number of HIV cases recorded in just the first seven months of the year, with 309 already developing into AIDS cases and 90 deaths.

Since 1984, there are already 19,915 HIV cases recorded in the country, including 1,815 AIDS cases and 1,029 deaths. (HDT/Sunnex)
