FOR the first time, a Filipino grabbed the top spot at the Maybank Go Ahead Challenge Grand Finale in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia held from August 11 to 16.

Richard Ocampo, 24, a BA Financial Management graduate from Adamson University, bested 59 other finalists from 16 different countries who qualified for the grand finale of the Maybank Go Ahead Challenge, one of Asia’s most rigorous business case competitions.

Ocampo was shortlisted along with two students from Bangladesh and Singapore for the Ultimate Maybank Go Ahead Challenger title.

As the Ultimate Maybank Go Ahead Challenger, Ocampo won US$ 1,000 (P43,680) and a two-week internship in Maybank New York. This is on top of the US$ 20,000 (P873,600) his team won.

Ocampo was also part of Team Avengers, which was named 2nd runner up in the Team category.

There were six Filipino students who were flown to Kuala Lumpur to represent Maybank Philippines, Inc. in the competition.

Team Star Wars, where John Alfred Mendoza of the University of the Philippines was a part of, bagged the top spot in the Team category.

Members of the winning team brought home US$ 40,000 (P1,747,200) in cash.

The other four representatives from the Philippines were: Winchell Well Wong, 4th year BS Business Administration and Accountancy student in UP; Camille Patricia Calma, 4th year BS Business Administration student in UP; John Richmond Go, 4th year BS Management minor in Chinese Studies and Finance student in Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU); and Selynn Alexis Co, 4th year BS Management Engineering student in ADMU.

Now on its third season, Maybank Go Ahead Challenge’s format exposed the contestants in various strategic challenges that included a business case presentation to Bank Internasional Indonesia President Director Taswin Zakaria, the creation of a corporate social responsibility program for Maybank, and selling of local products of each team members’ country.

Both the champion team and the Ultimate Go Ahead Challenger will take part in Maybank’s Global Leadership Development Program where they will get a chance to interact with Maybank’s top 50 most influential leaders.

The Maybank Go Ahead Challenge is a multi-disciplinary business talent competition open to recent graduates and final-year university students.

The contest is part of Maybank’s aspiration to create a talent pool of world-class future business leaders and competent financial experts for the region. (PNA)
