TWO women topped the five-person shortlist of nominees for the position of Deputy Ombudsman for Visayas, which will be vacated by Pelagio Apostol on Thursday.
Supreme Court (SC) Project Management Office head Geraldine Faith Econg received five votes from the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) on Monday, along with Ombudsman Acting Director Carla Juris Narvios-Tanco.
Land Registration Authority Director Paul Elmer Clemente, Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) Commissioner Vincent Gengos Jr., and Gilbert Kintanar, chief of staff of Commission on Audit (COA) Chairperson and aspiring Supreme Court (SC) justice Grace Pulido-Tan, also made it to the list with four votes each.
Econg, a former Cebu City judge, handled the parricide case against former Dinagat representative Ruben Ecleo Jr., one of the three remaining most wanted persons in the country.
Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno named her in late 2012 as head of the Regional Court Administration Office (RCAO) in Cebu but her appointment was recalled due to lack of blessing from the rest of 15-member SC.
Econg's integrity was also put into question after she was investigated by the SC, along with other judges in Cebu, for committing irregularities in solemnizing marriages in 2007. She was cleared by the High Court in April last year.
President Benigno Aquino III has 90 days to select Apostol's replacement from the nominees submitted by the JBC. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
