7 killed, 14 injured in road mishap

LINAMON, Lanao del Norte (Updated) -- Seven Meranaws died and 14 others were seriously injured in a vehicular accident along the provincial road in Purok 7, Upper Poblacion in Linamon town in Lanao del Norte.

Police Senior Inspector Domingo Murillo II of Linamon police station said "the assembled vehicle was loaded with 30 passengers; some of them occupied the rooftop of the vehicle."

The vehicle, with plate number MBU–519, was driven by Abdul Azis Baro. The victims were on their way home in Barangay Pendulunan, Munai town after attending a “tibaw” (wake) in Wato town in Lanao del Sur when the accident happened.

Investigation revealed that while the vehicle was traversing Linamon town, the driver lost control of the brake and rammed the vehicle into two coconut trees on the right side of the road.

According to witnesses, those who occupied the rooftop were tossed upon impact, while four died on the spot and three seriously wounded passengers died in a hospital in Iligan City.

The victims were transported to the hospitals by two ambulances, an army vehicle from 4th Mechanize Infantry Battalion and police patrol vehicles from Linamon and Matungao towns.

The injured passengers are still recuperating in two hospitals in Iligan City while the remains of those who died were brought to their homes in Barangays Tambo and Pendulonan in Munai town.
