TYPHOON Jose (Halong) continues to enhance the southwest monsoon or "hanging habagat" that will induce rains in most parts of country, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Pagasa weather forecaster Alvin Pura said that as of 10 a.m. Wednesday, the eye of Typhoon Jose was located 830 kilometers east northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, packing maximum winds of 150 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph.

Pura said the typhoon changed its movement from north northeast to northward and has maintained its speed at 15 kph.

With its movement, the typhoon is expected to be outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Thursday and will head toward Japan, said Pura.

Typhoon Jose will not make any landfall in the Philippines, but will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon affecting Luzon, Pagasa said, adding monsoon rains, which may trigger flash floods and landslides, will prevail over Zambales.

According to Pura, August is the peak of southwest monsoon rains, and Pagasa warned the public against flooding particularly in low-lying areas.

Pura said the rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, will have occasional rains, while Visayas and Mindanao will experience fair weather with partly cloudy to cloudy. Isolated rainshowers are expected due to thunderstorms.

Fisherfolk and those with small seacrafts were also advised Wednesday not to venture out over the seaboards of Luzon due to strong gale force wind associated with the surge of southwest monsoon enhanced by Typhoon Jose. (Sunnex/PNA)
