MANILA -- The state weather bureau hoisted on Tuesday morning public storm warning signals in four areas in Luzon as Typhoon Henry (Matmo) continues to maintain its strength and speed while traversing Balintang Channel toward the eastern coast of Batanes.

In its 11 a.m. weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that as of 10 a.m. Tuesday, the eye of the typhoon was located 170 kilometers (km) northeast of Basco, Batanes. Henry is forecast to move northwest at 24 kilometers per hour (kph) with maximum sustained winds of 140 kph near the center.

Pagasa hoisted storm warning signal number 2 over Batanes Group of Islands.

Cagayan, Babuyuan and Calayan Group of Islands are still under storm warning signal number 1.

Classes in all levels in Muntinlupa were cancelled Tuesday because of the torrential rains brought by the typhoon.

The state weather bureau said Henry will enhance southwest monsoon, bringing moderate to occasionally heavy rains over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Cagayan Valley.

It added that Mindanao and the rest of the Visayas and Luzon will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rains.

"Residents in these areas are advised to be alert against possible flash floods and landslides," Pagasa warned.

Pagasa weather forecaster Gener Quitlong said Henry is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) and will make a landfall in Taiwan by Wednesday. (PNA/Sunnex)
