TWO communist New People's Army (NPA) rebels were killed and two policemen were injured when the insurgents attacked a police station in Surigao del Norte on Thursday afternoon.
First Lieutenant Joe Patrick Martinez, civil military operations officer of the Army's 402nd Brigade, said that about 60 rebels who came in aboard a forward truck staged the attack.
Martinez said the rebels commenced the attack on the Alegria municipal police station around 3 p.m., ensuing a 30-minute fighfight with policemen manning their posts.
Martinez said the rebels were able to overrun the police station.
Two policemen were injured by the rebels who later withdrew, carting away four M16 rifles, an M14 rifle and a shotgun.
Meanwhile, two rebels were killed during the attack while an AK47 rifle was recovered from the scene.
Martinez said reinforcing troops from the Army's 30th Infantry Battalion later clashed with about 15 rebels at Pungtod village, also in Alegria town for about 10 minutes.
He said the rebels withdrew and are still being pursued by government troops as of this posting. (VR/Sunnex)
