CAGAYAN DE ORO -- Impasug-ong town Mayor Mario Okinlay died in an ambush in Barangay Bontongon, Impasug-ong town at 8:20 a.m. Wednesday.
Major Christian Uy, 4th Infantry Division spokesperson, said three suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) shot Okinlay while he was driving his motorcycle.
Okinlay was part of a convoy of about 20 motorcycles. They were on their way home from Bontongon, where they delivered basic services to residents of the barangay last Monday.
Okinlay reportedly had two gunshot wounds on his abdomen and the firearms used have not yet been identified by authorities.
Uy told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro that Okinlay died around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday.
Okinlay was the only target of the suspected Maoist rebels.
Mauro Maneja, a worker at the Impasug-ong municipal treasurer's office, said in a radio interview Wednesday morning that Okinlay's wife and two children were inside the hospital.
Bukidnon Governor Jose Maria Zubiri, Representative Florencio Flores Jr., and Malaybalay City Mayor Inaki Zubiri also rushed to the hospital where Okinlay was brought. The Zubiris are Okinlay's partymates under Bukidnon Paglaum. (Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
