Binay: Opposition still intact

NOT even the detention of Senator Jinggoy Estrada and looming arrest of Senator Juan Ponce Enrile over their alleged involvement in the corruption of Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) can cripple the opposition led by Vice President Jejomar Binay.

Binay assured this on Tuesday in light of speculations that Malacanang has a systematic plan of going after individuals from the opposition as alleged by former President and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada following the arrest of his son Jinggoy.

"Bakit naman napilayan? Nandyan pa rin ang oposisyon," he told reporters on the sidelines of a socialized housing event in Makati City.

He maintained that the current opposition is not out to destroy the Aquino administration, which entrusted him the job of looking after the welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and implementing affordable housing programs.

"Lagi naming sinasabi na 'we are the new type of opposition'. We will compliment or criticize the administration when the necessity arises," Binay said.

The Vice President also said he will not change his political affiliation when asked to comment on Estrada's statement that he will seek the presidency for the third time in 2016 if Binay will run under the administration.

"Parang mali 'yung sequence nun. Kung ako ay tatakbo under sa administration, administration ang sumasama sa opposition. Hindi pabaliktad. Hindi ko naman igi-give up ang pagka-opposition ko. This is a coalition," he said.

He admitted though that in politics, "everything is possible."

Binay, who declared in 2011 his desire to become the country's 16th president, earlier called off plans to launch his political party for the 2016 polls amid the raging issue of PDAF scam that implicated some of his allies.

The Vice President has kept a neutral stand on the issue, saying the cases must be resolved based on evidence. (Sunnex)
