PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III has appointed Ma. Theresa Dolores Gomez-Estoesta as new Associate Justice of the Sandiganbayan, Malacanang said Monday.

Estoesta replaced Amparo Cabotaje-Tang, who has since been appointed as Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice, Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a statement.

The appointment was signed on June 20 and has been transmitted to Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, he said.

At the time of her appointment, Estoesta served as presiding judge in the Manila regional trial court to which she was appointed in 2006.

Before that, she served as presiding judge in the Manila Metropolitan Trial Court. She also served in the Solicitor General's office from 1991 to 2002.

She obtained her degrees in political science and law from De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila University, respectively.

Among her citations are: most outstanding judge for first-level courts in the Supreme Court’s search for judicial excellence (2005); and Chief Justice Cayetano Arellano awardee as most outstanding judge for second-level courts (2012).

Malacanang officials earlier said that Aquino took time before naming a new anti-graft court justice because he wanted to make sure the official's impartiality amid the pork barrel cases it has been handling. (SDR/Sunnex)
