THE government of the Philippines welcomed on Thursday the accession of His Majesty King Felipe VI to the throne of the Kingdom of Spain while assuring him the continued support of the Filipinos.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said it welcomes the proclamation of the new king of Spain onwards the continued advancement of the European nation.

"In this new chapter in Spain's history, the Filipino nation conveys our utmost confidence that His Majesty King Felipe VI will be able to pursue a grand vision for his country’s future," said the DFA.

It said the Philippines is hoping for a long and fruitful reign for the new king of the country.

"We wish him and Her Majesty Queen Letizia good health and prosperity for the coming years," said the DFA.

On Thursday, the 39-year reign of Juan Carlos ended with the succession of his son, King Felipe VI.

The DFA said the hailing of the new King of Spain also comes at a great time for the Philippines since it is proximate to the celebration of Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day on June 30.

"As we extol the longstanding friendship and historical ties that unite our nations, the Filipino people assure His Majesty of our continued friendship and support for the people of Spain," said the DFA.

To recall, it was Spanish explorer, Ruy López de Villalobos, who named the Philippines as Las Islas Filipinas back in 1543 as a way to honor Philip II of Spain, thereby starting the 300-year rule of Spain in the Philippines.

In August, the Philippine national basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas, is set to participate in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, which is being hosted by Spain. (HDT/Sunnex)
