CEBU CITY -- Tropical Depression "Ester" has maintained its strength but slightly accelerated while moving northeastward, the country's weather bureau reported Tuesday afternoon.
In its 5 p.m. weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) located Ester at 200 kilometers (km) north northeast of Basco, Batanes.
Batanes province is still under storm warning signal number 1, Pagasa added.
The tropical depression has maximum winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, Pagasa said, adding that it is forecast to move northeast at 22 kph.
Ester is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, the Pagasa officially declared the start of the rainy season in the country on Tuesday.
Pagasa weather forecaster Buddy Javier said that all the criteria in declaring the onset of the rainy season have been met.
Javier said the criteria include the presence of southwest winds and the amount of rainfall in at least five weather bureau stations across the country reached 25 millimeters in volume in five straight days. (Sunnex)
