ANTI-NARCOTICS agents have seized P14-million worth of methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu during a controlled delivery operation in Iligan City recently, an official said Thursday.
Undersecretary Arturo Cacdac, Jr., Director General of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), said that two suspected drug couriers were also arrested during the operation on June 3 conducted by elements of PDEA-Northern Luzon, in coordination with PDEA-National Capital Region.
The consignees of the package were identified as Taha Abdullah, 42, and his wife, Anisah, also 42, both residents of Iligan City.
"Taha and Anisah are the incumbent barangay councilor and barangay treasurer, respectively of Barangay Batuan, Balabagan, Lanao del Sur," Cacdac said.
"The seized illegal drug, weighing approximately two kilograms in two big transparent plastic cellophanes, was hidden inside a speaker box and placed inside a package," the PDEA chief said.
Prior to the operation, an intelligence report was received by PDEA-Northern Mindanao that a parcel containing shabu is due for delivery using a courier service from Letre, Malabon City.
Around 10 a.m., operatives of PDEA immediately coordinated with the courier company and conducted a controlled delivery operation on the alleged shabu package to be picked up from the courier company’s branch at the Gaisano Mall, Iligan City.
The said package was declared as a speaker box and was opened by the suspects in the presence of media representative, elected public officials, Department of Justice (DOJ) representatives and PDEA operatives.
Also confiscated from the couple in plainview inside their Mitsubishi Montero (with plate number KGL-736), were two additional plastic sachets of shabu weighing more or less 10 grams worth P80,000.
The pieces of drug evidence were brought to PDEA-Northern Mindanao Laboratory Service for forensic examination, while the suspects are currently detained at PDEA jail facility.
"The Abdullahs are not an ordinary couple. They are elective and appointive officials of Barangay Batuan, Balabagan, Lanao del Sur. Imagine, both of them involved in the illegal drug trade? This partly sums up the sad state of affairs in their area of jurisdiction," Cacdac said.
A case for violation of Section 5 (Delivery of Dangerous Drugs) under Article II, of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 will be filed in court against the suspects.
Controlled delivery operation is an investigative technique of allowing an unlawful consignment of dangerous drugs and substances to be tracked, leading to the identification and arrest of the intended receiver, according to Section 3, Article I, of the anti-drug law. (SDR/Sunnex)
