A GRADE one pupil in Pangasinan was killed in a road accident involving a tricycle and a van driven by a village official on the first day of school on Monday, police said in a belated report Tuesday.

Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson Senior Superintendent Wilben Mayor said the road accident happened along OsmeƱa Road, Barangay Angio, San Fabian town in Pangasinan.

Quoting a report sent to him by the Pangasinan police, Mayor said the van driven by Rogelio Hufana, barangay chairman of Inmalor Sur, San Fabian, Pangasinan, hit the tricycle driven by Rafe Dismaya.

The grade one pupil, who was riding the tricycle along with three others, was declared dead on arrival in the hospital.

Other tricycle passengers -- a grade 6 and 7 students and one adult passenger -- were also rushed to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Mayor said the local police are still investigating the incident.

The PNP earlier said opening of classes on Monday was "generally peaceful" and that no untoward incident was recorded. (Sunnex)
