(UPDATED) THREE communist rebels were killed in separate clashes with government forces in Surigao del Norte and Northern Samar, military spokesmen reported Friday.

The latest incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. Thursday at the vicinity of Mt. Taglintian in Tagbuyawan in Surigao del Norte, said Major Christian Uy, spokesman of the Army's 4th Infantry Division.

Uy said troops from the 30th Infantry Battalion were on a security operation when they caught up with about 20 New People's Army (NPA) rebels, ensuing a 30-minute firefight.

Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) information officer Captain Alberto Caber said the NPA rebels fled leaving behind their two dead comrades following the firefight. There were indications that the rebels suffered more casualties as evidenced by bloodstains and personal belongings left by the rebels, he said.

No one among the troops was either killed or wounded.

Uy said the soldiers also recovered at the scene four rifles, 10 backpacks, a radio, three improvised explosive devices, 20 meters detonating cord, 50 meters electrical wire, three bandoleers, five magazines with ammunition, two cooking pots, two gas stoves, medical supplies, personal belongings and documents of high intelligence value.

The second firefight occurred around 10:32 a.m. last Wednesday at Osang village in Catubig town in Northern Samar, said Captain Amado Gutierrez, spokesperson of the Army's 8th Infantry Division.

Gutierrez said troops from the 34th Infantry Battalion were on a similar security operation in the village when they engaged about 15 rebels in a 15-minute firefight.

During clearing operation, the soldiers found at the scene a slain rebel, along with three rifles loaded with ammunition. (VR/Bong Garcia/Sunnex)
